CONTROLLER

Axine is a leader in electrochemical oxidation technology for industrial wastewater treatment. Our mission is to establish a new industry standard for the cost-effective destruction of “forever chemicals” (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances also known as PFAS), pharmaceuticals, solvents, and other persistent organic contaminants found in water. Our cleantech treatment-as-a-service (TAAS) model and use of machine learning guarantees compliance with current and future regulations, offering sustainable and affordable on-site solutions.

The Company’s technology is fully proven, and its business model validated. With a growing number of commercial service agreements with multinational customers, Axine has established a foundation for sustained growth and is entering a period of expansion and scale-up. Axine is seeking a Controller to help build out a world-class Finance function. Axine has a Vancouver-area office-first flexible working policy.

Position Overview

We are seeking a conscientious professional accountant who pays attention to detail while grasping the bigger picture. The successful candidate will enjoy working collaboratively in teams and is happy to complete challenging tasks on their own, while seeking guidance when needed. With a service mindset, the Controller will help establish a new brand identity for the finance function within the Company. They also will thrive in a start-up/emerging technology company environment, identifying areas of improvement and contributing to the scaling up of processes and automation tools. There will be lots to learn as the Company expands commercially in the Americas and invests into other international territories.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Develop and implement best practice accounting and financial systems, policies, and processes that meet the current and near-term business requirements of the Company.
  • Prepare accurate, concise and timely monthly and year-to-date financial reports, compared to budget/forecast where applicable.
  • Multi-subsidiary consolidation with foreign currencies.
  • Coordinate completion of monthly reconciliation package to support general ledger balances.
  • Preparation, with appropriate detail, of accurate annual external financial statements under Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (“ASPE”); liaison with auditors.
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate system of internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Review and approval or preparation of Payroll including payments of sales commissions.
  • Review and approval or preparation of customer invoices and coordination of receivable collection efforts.
  • Analysis of manufacturing variances where applicable; manage Company’s costing methodologies.
  • Direct regular (invoice) payment run.
  • Collaborate with external tax compliance specialists, including provision of required financial data provision.
  • Prepare or direct the preparation and filing of returns for sales, VAT and other taxes in all jurisdictions in which the Company operates, in order to be compliant with all laws and regulations.
  • Assist development teams with financial data provision and selected reporting for Company’s SR&ED and other government funding initiatives.
  • Maintain appropriate transfer pricing structures and generate international intercompany transactions, as necessary.
  • Ensure accurate maintenance of information for corporate filings, as necessary.
  • Leadership (in future) of Accounts Payable Specialists and Accountants.
  • Other duties as required from time to time related to the support of the Finance function and team.

Skills and experience:

  • Chartered professional accountant with 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in closing monthly financials including manual consolidation with foreign currencies.
  • Experience in manufacturing/assembly environments will be valued.
  • Must possess a collaborative and service-oriented mindset with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Should possess good financial and business judgment skills and instincts to go along with detail orientation.
  • Motivated to work in a fast-paced environment, to move things forward, to meet stringent timelines, and to handle multiple demands simultaneously.
  • ERP implementation experience will be valued.
  • 100% (or 80%) full-time equivalent. Remote work may be considered during review of applicants.
